Diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance known to man. Given their beautiful and brilliant features, diamonds prove to be highly coveted gems when it comes to jewelry pieces. Diamonds can be cut into various ways, and one timeless cut is known as the cushion cut.

Old Mine Cut Cushion

The old mine cut, also called the “miner cut,” is one of the earliest type of diamond cut having been around since the 1700s. This antique cushion cut gained in popularity primarily during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Old mine cushions feature an enlarged culet. It also has large geometric facets and usually weighs more than the other types of cushion cut diamonds. Other attributes of the old mine cut cushion are its deep pavilion and high crown.

Brilliant Cut Cushion

The brilliant cut cushion diamond shape was created following the old mine, thanks to the advancement in diamond cutting technology. The brilliant cut cushion has facets that extend outward to the outer edge from the center of the stone. What makes this cushion cut exemplary is that it takes full advantage of the diamond’s light return. It also gives extraordinary brilliance that is comparable to that of a brilliant round cut diamond. Brilliant cut cushions are usually the most expensive cushion cut available today.

Modified Brilliant Cut Cushion

The Modified Brilliant cushion refers to the additional facets cut into the stone to provide the most brilliance. This cut can also be referred to as the hybrid cushion which is a combination of a brilliant cut’s facet style and various facet patterns. This cut also contains modified facets within the middle of the pavilion facets, which offers more sparkle and shine. This cut creates a modern cushion cut diamond that preserves its carat weight while ensuring the timeless and classy look of a cushion brilliant.

Modified Brilliant Cut “Crushed Ice”

A modified “crushed ice” is a newly developed cushion cut. Its sparkle gives off a shimmer that is similar to sparkling water. This cushion cut has shorter star facets compared to the old mine and brilliant cuts. The crushed ice cushion modified cut is the most common faceting style because it saves a big portion of the original stone. The crushed ice cut is a popular style for cushion cut engagement rings, and it is also less expensive compared to brilliant cut cushions.
