The Patek Philippe Nautilus is unarguably the most sought-after and famous timepiece globally. In an era defined by luxury sports watches, the Nautilus remains unchallenged.

The particular Nautilus 5980/1A has been instrumental in acting as the entry point to this legendary watch line and making the watch landscape as it's today.

Brief History

The story of the original Nautilus has been told and retold multiple times by media outlets. The year was 1976, and with the epiphany of quartz technology, mechanical watches were at their downfall. The market desperately needed a design intervention that would offer a fresh perspective on the luxury watch concept.

And that’s when Patek Philippe intervened. The brand introduced its first-ever Nautilus in collaboration with the renowned watch designer Gerald Genta. Unapologetically industrial and unbending, the Nautilus committed thoroughly to the new vision of modern luxury in every aspect.

In 2006, Patek announced three more additions to the line-up: 5711, 5712, and 5980. These three watches commemorated Nautilus’ 30th anniversary, and the 5980—which at that time only came with a blue and black colored dial—became the first Nautilus to have a chronograph complication. The 5980 returned in 2012 with a stainless steel variant and a gorgeous all-white dial. However, this variant was only produced for two years and was discontinued in 2014.

Despite the limited production run, 5980/1A became a well-respected timepiece, gaining its place among the sporting chronograph greats and taking Nautilus to new heights.

Movement

Nautilus 5980, when released, introduced a new chronograph movement. Inside the watch is a movement fully crafted in-house by Patek: the new Caliber CH28-520, exhibiting a hefty 21-carat gold central rotor that spins the movement. Credited to this self-winding mechanism, your 5980 will keep precise and accurate time for years to come.

Design

When talking about the Nautilus series, the first thing that comes to mind is its iconic design. The line features timepieces instantly recognizable for their sturdy and rugged appearance, headlining sizable cases, octagonal bezels, and horizontally embossed dials.

The 5980 has some distinct features, albeit still clearly "Nautilus." The white dial is, for sure, the standout design detail. With its hints of silver, it soaks up the surrounding tones and pairs nicely with the lustrous steel case.

The case is a bit thicker than its brethren at 12.5mm, yet still is very manageable. This added thickness indicates a sporty, more youthful look than the other iterations.

Subdials and chronograph pushers are integrated so seamlessly that they're barely noticeable. The subdial houses both minute and hour markers for the chronograph. This accounts for the simplified information display while maintaining a clutter-free look identified with the original Nautilus.
