The luxury watch industry is undergoing a seismic shift. Over the past five years, prices from legacy watch brands like Rolex, Omega, and Patek Philippe have surged, some models increasing by more than 20%. While inflation is often cited, many watch collectors and experts are turning to both household watch names and independent watches as investments in a turbulent economy.

According to Guillaume Laidet, co-founder of the independent brand SpaceOne Watches, the traditional dominance of legacy watchmakers is breaking down. "Consumers are smarter now," says Laidet. "They do their research on enthusiast blogs, compare specifications, and often come to the conclusion that a €2,000 microbrand watch offers nearly the same quality and design as a €10,000 legacy model."

The Rise of Microbrand Watches

The Rise of Microbrand Watches

Driven by transparency, innovation, and online access, microbrand watches, once overlooked, are now redefining what it means to own a quality timepiece. Brands like Studio Underdog, Furlan Marri, Echo/Neutra, and Christopher Ward have built strong communities through direct to consumer models and exceptional storytelling.

What separates these independent watch brands from the traditional players?

  1. Competitive Specs: Brands such as Formex and Serica use COSC certified movements, once exclusive to high end Swiss manufacturers.

  2. Original Design: From colorful dials to bold case materials, microbrands are pushing the envelope on aesthetic innovation.

  3. Affordability Meets Quality: Microbrands deliver affordable luxury watches that offer real value, often with the same components and features found in watches that cost 3 to 5x more.

A perfect example is the Christopher Ward C12 Loco, which features an integrated bracelet and open dial, traits typically seen in watches priced far higher.

Why Microbrands Are Winning on Design and Value

Thomas Van Straaten, founder of Venustas Per Constantiam (VPC), believes the design language of microbrands is where they truly shine. Legacy brands must cater to broad marketing data and stay within the bounds of their conglomerate parent companies. The result? Often uninspired, repetitive models.

In contrast, microbrands can afford to be daring. “We're not chasing the specs race,” Van Straaten notes. “We’re telling unique stories with every piece.”

From Online to In Store: The Microbrand Movement Grows

From Online to In Store: The Microbrand Movement Grows

The success of microbrand watches isn't just online. Events like the Windup Watch Fair have brought together thousands of enthusiasts, and retailers like Pérpetual Gallery in Dubai now sell multiple microbrands in store and online.

Even more traditional watchmaking techniques, like enamel dials, once exclusive to ultra luxury pieces, are being revisited by microbrands such as AnOrdain.

Yet with success comes a new challenge: pricing. Should microbrands stay affordable or climb the luxury ladder? Federico Zulian of HTD Watches believes in staying true to the community: “I’d love to offer a gold chronograph at €10,000, not cheap, but still unmatched value when compared to legacy brand pricing.”
